Another question that's mostly curiosity but has some practical value.

I used my current laptop, with windows 7, when I was out of town for 2
months in 2018 and 3 months in 2019, and I set it to hibernate when I
closed the lid, and it did that, because t he next day it was off and
the startup message was something like Resuming Windows.

I have Hibernate set for closing the lid, but in the Start menu,
hibernate is not one of the choices. ######################
That's strange in itself.

But it's stil listed in Power Options / Advanced Settings for the lid.

Yet when I close the lid, like last night, the screen goes black (I
opened it to look), the harddrive light blinks for a long time (8 gigs
RAM, most of it in use) and then the power light goes off. It's
hibernated, right?

But the next day, like today, the screen is lit up and everything is the
way it ws before I tried to hibernate. And checking mail reception, I
didn't go more t han an hour all night without getting mail. I got
mail at 3:26AM, went to bed at 4:00, and got mail again at 5:13, 6:13,
6:45. 7:13 etc.

Did opening the lid after hibernating started somehow undo hibernating.

As an aside, it was up to 201 when I got to it today, but dropped down
to 170 shortly after. It's not been that low after being hot for all the
time I've been wat ching. Now it's 179 to 183, which is also low for
the last couple weeks (ever since I vacuumed it :-) )

The new computer is scheduled to come tomorrow, Thursday, but otoh UPS
hasnt' said a word about it since Saturday at 3AM when it left Cerritos
Callifornia. Had it r eally been on the truck for 4.5 days? They used
to update tracking every 12 or 24 hours or so, giving a new city a
package was in. Maybe mine is on an express truck.

If there was an item in Task Scheduler, do you suppose the RTC would
wake the computer, unhibernate it, and run the task ?

Win10 can generate reports, with no guarantee they'll tell you anything
useful.

Apparently. It finally changed location, to 20 miles from me 4.5 days
later. And then it moved closer, so they will probably deliver on time
tomorrow.

I thought I had nothing in the scheduler, but I have 22 items!!! It
will take some time to review them. And tomorrow I plan to play with
my new computer, so I'll get back to you.

Didn't work on the first try, but I'll get it to work. I didn't know
about this. Thanks.

Just wait until you go under the Microsoft -> Windows tree node in Task
Scheduler. Uffdah? That's a branch you have to visit to fully thwart
automatic updates in Windows 10 (along with various services to disable,
including those Microsoft secretes they are involved in updates).
You'll also find Microsoft's defrag is defined under that event branch
(but with a custom trigger that you probably won't understand) which has
defrag run on Windows startup and by triggers (unknown to you) during
your Windows session.

Maybe I'll just give up on this, AFter all, I have the new computer now
-- the second one is working well -- and I won't be taking many trips
with the laptop because of the virus. I was also thinking of buying a
new laptop, but first I have to see how cleaning or changing the fan
goes. Again I like that it has a DVD drive.

I have Hibernate set for closing the lid, but in the Start menu,
hibernate is not one of the choices.
Make sure Hibernate mode is enabled. In a command shell with
administrator privileges (i.e., elevated command prompt), run:

powercfg /hibernate on

Then go to Control Panel (control.exe) and go into Power Options. In
the left pane, select "Choose what the power buttons do". You should
see Hibernate as a choice in the "Shutdown settings" list; however,
first you have to click on "Change settings that are currently
unavailable". That will enable the selections in the shutdown list.
Make sure Hibernate is selected to show in the Power menu (Start ->
Power menu). Note: I would recommend to DISABLE the fast start setting
as it is known to cause problems.

Back in the Power Options dialog, there is a left-pane link for defining
the button actions (Power and Sleep). When I select that, Hibernate is
not listed for either the drop-down lists for actions of the Power or
Sleep buttons. However, if I edit the power plan and go to the advanced
settings and scroll down to the "Power buttons and lid" node in the
tree, I can select Hibernate for the Power button. Don't know why the
setting selections are not in sync.
